Our Story

Like all good stories, it all started in a bar….

In 2021 after 12 months of drinking every type of Gin you could imagine, when finally we were let loose into bars again, we wanted to try something new. I’d heard a lot that Rum was set to be the next ‘Gin’ but I’d never really liked it….I’d always thought of Rum as being overly sweet with brown spiced sailor vibes that could only be paired with Coke.

I also loved cocktails but didn’t want the hassle of endless ingredients (that I never used up!) but instead wanted drinks I could make that were easy to do for an ‘amateur’ who wanted to try something different.

I wondered if there was another side to Rum….one for people who wanted something more refreshing for a natural spritz without the sickly taste of sugar but that could also be used to add flavour to home-made cocktails in a hassle free way? Like a ‘Rum and some Raspberry’…

One year later, long story short, I’d left my career, built a distillery and Distinct Distillers was born! Josh quit his music career to retrain as a distiller and set to work on creating a really unique rum spirit that opened up a lighter way to enjoy rum.

Changing perceptions is hard, but from the beginning we’ve set ourselves these 3 goals to not lose sight of….

Goal 1: Make our Rum from scratch.

Many brands import spirit and flavour it but we were adament we needed to make it from scratch to have full control on developing a unique flavour. It’s much harder (and messier) to do but it’s worth it and we’re proud of our authenticity.

Goal 2: Create a spirit with zero sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Many flavoured spirits can have anywhere between 5-12% sugar which we didn’t want. To avoid this we use an innovative hybrid distillation technique to keep the spirit as pure as possible and any sweetness you taste comes from the 100% natural flavours only.

Goal 3: produce in the most sustainable way possible.

We have a unique partnership with the family business which produces animal feed and fertiliser. Usually, fermented waste is tipped onto field but we use ours to create a revolutionary soil fertiliser used by many farmers in the UK practicing regenerative farming.

Good soil health is one of the most important elements to creating a sustainable future but doesn’t get the focus it deserves….in short, soil puts food on our plates so it needs protecting!
